Threadgold Safety Management is a specialized consultancy providing safety management services and advice to the geophysical sector and to the broader global Oil and Gas industry.

Ian M. Threadgold, Principal Consultant, has over 36 years of experience in the Oil and Gas industry. After graduating from the University of Manchester in the UK, in Physics and Geology, he began his career joining a geophysical contractor and later moving to the US with the same company.  He worked in several seismic processing positions and later managed a dedicated client processing center in Los Angeles.  Moving on he went to work for an independent oil company before finding his niche in 1978 with Amoco International Oil Company.  Ian moved with the company in a variety of seismic acquisition and processing roles, living several times in the Middle East, and in Turkey.

Ian has had over 25 years of experience as a Project Manager or Operations Manager on numerous land and marine seismic surveys, and aeromagnetic surveys, where he developed a passion for safety and other key aspects of successful operations.  Some of the highlights in recent years include the industry-changing Wide Azimuth Towed Streamer (WATS) field trial in the Gulf of Mexico (2004-05), and being Geophysical Delivery Manager for over $300 million of geophysical acquisition work in Angola between 2008 and 2009.

During his career he has worked successfully with governmental entities, NOCs, multi-national partners and both domestic and foreign regulatory bodies. Over time Ian recognized that HSSE was the area where he felt that he could make the most significant contributions and as a result moved towards focusing his career on HSSE matters.

In the years since BP and Amoco merged, Ian has held the role of Geophysical Operations HSSE Network Leader and ultimately was named the Segment Technical Authority for Geophysical Operations in 2008.  In this role, amongst other things, he authored the company’s Segment Defined Practice for Management of Geophysical Operations, was responsible for setting policy on geophysical HSSE issues such as competence requirements etc., providing guidance to senior management, and was a member of the Environmental Technology Board.

Between 2008 and 2010, Ian was also Chairman the OGP Geophysical HSSE Sub-committee, and a member of the OGP Safety Committee.  The collaborative work between the Geophysical HSSE Sub-committee and the IAGC HSE & Security Steering Committee has led to overall geophysical industry safety performance improvement.  This has been accomplished through development and implementation of industry standards, sharing of best practices and lessons learned, working together with all sides of the geophysical industry with a common goal of saving lives, reducing injuries and preventing damage to the environment.

He retired in August 2010, after nearly 32 years with BP and it’s predecessor company Amoco, establishing Threadgold Safety Management at that time.  Ian brings a deep understanding of the oil and gas industry, a strong operational background and an inquisitive mind to safety management.  In 2009, he passed the NEBOSH International General Certificate examination in Occupational Health and Safety, with Distinction.  He is a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, and also the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
